Gipping Valley Partnership Maths Project

It has been decided to put the bulk of our money this year into raising standards of teaching & learning in maths, as it was agreed that this something that would benefit all schools.  We have been lucky enough to secure the services of Stuart Naylor of Millgate House Education to work with us, on a consultancy basis, to improve maths learning for KS2 pupils across all GVP schools. Although not a maths specialist as such, Stuart says he knows a lot about creative ways to improve teaching and learning because of his work in a variety of roles. His company, Millgate House Education, has, and I quote, “gained a national and international reputation as a source of innovative resources for teachers, high quality INSET and consultancy for schools and LEAs, as well as making a significant contribution to projects to promote public involvement in science.”

Stuart & his partner, Brenda Keogh were responsible for developing Concept Cartoons in Science and they have more recently worked with John Dabell to produce Concept Cartoons for maths. They are currently running INSET on the use of Concept Cartoons across the country, as well as a series of courses on Active Assessment in maths.  He will be bringing some fresh ideas to the issues that face us in maths, not just the standard Primary Strategy fix-its. He has spoken, for example about the importance of talk for learning, problem solving, identifying and using pupils’ misconceptions to further their understanding, etc.

An initial meeting with Stuart will take place on Friday, 15th January, to give some shape and direction to the project, which is likely to last until the end of the summer term, (although this is subject to review). All Headteachers & *Maths Leaders of schools who have contributed to the Gipping Valley Partnership this year (a levy of £1 per pupil, based on numbers recorded in your January Census return) are invited to this meeting to discuss ideas with Stuart and other members of the Partnership. The meeting will be held at Stowmarket Middle School and is likely to start at around 11.30 am, but this is to be confirmed. Lunch will be provided.

As we want to make this meeting as productive as possible, we have also set up a meeting of Heads & *Maths Leaders on Friday, 8th January, when we can discuss common problems, solutions and ideas for the kind of work and the outcomes that we want from Stuart’s involvement.  This meeting will start at 9.30am and will finish at lunch time. Supply cover will be paid for staff attendance on both occasions.

We feel that this is an ideal opportunity to work together to help improve the quality of teaching and learning for all our pupils and hope that you will want to be part of it. If you have not, as yet, joined the Partnership, it is not too late to pay your levy and be part of this project. Please contact Sally Holmes, Clare Farrant, Viv Rolph or Sara Ward for more details.

Phase 2

September 2010 – April 2011

Stuart’s plans for the second phase of the maths project are outlined below:

The first session will be on Wednesday, 14th September, 9.15 – 12.00 at Stowmarket Middle School. Please confirm how many people from your school will be attending. Supply cover available for all teachers.

CPD sessions: continuing to offer a combination of creative teaching/learning strategies that have immediate classroom relevance and principles that help to put effective pedagogy into practice.

Follow on sessions: offering an opportunity for people to work in smaller groups on issues that they view as significant, with an action-research focus. This might involve shared planning and teaching within and/or across schools and phases.
